Mountain biking in San Diego: Mission Trails and the Fortunas

Where to mountain bike near San Diego: Mission Trails Regional Park, the Fortuna Mountains, Black Mountain and Sycamore Canyon, plus local MTB clubs.

San Diego mountain biking is mostly multi-use parks inside the city rather than one big trail network. Where to mountain bike in San Diego

Mission Trails is about eight miles northeast of downtown and covers more than 7,000 acres, one of the largest city-owned parks in the country, with close to 60 miles of trail. Most of it is open to bikes, but a handful of trails are posted foot traffic only, so read the signs at each junction. The two Fortuna peaks divide the park: the western half is steeper and rockier, while the eastern half around Lake Murray and the visitor center rolls more gently.

North of the city, Black Mountain Open Space Park in Rancho Peñasquitos has climbs and descents open to bikes, and the Goodan Ranch / Sycamore Canyon preserve near Poway links old ranch roads with narrower trail. The main path through Los Peñasquitos Canyon is flat dirt if you want an easy spin instead of a climb.

Two things before you go. Check trail status: San Diego’s parks close or restrict trails when they’re wet, because wet-weather riding tears up the surface. And the loose, technical descending many riders are after lives east of the city in the Cleveland National Forest, around Pine Valley and the Laguna Mountains, beyond this page’s radius. Close to home, Mission Trails and the Fortunas are the training ground, and a local club will show you which junctions connect.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I mountain bike near San Diego?

Mission Trails Regional Park is the go-to, about eight miles northeast of downtown, with roughly 60 miles of multi-use trail across more than 7,000 acres split by the North and South Fortuna Mountains. Further north, Black Mountain Open Space Park in Rancho Peñasquitos and the Goodan Ranch / Sycamore Canyon preserve near Poway add more dirt open to bikes.

Are bikes allowed in Mission Trails Regional Park?

On most trails, yes, but some are signed foot traffic only, so read the trailhead signs. The western side around the Fortuna Mountains is steeper and more technical; the eastern side near Lake Murray and the visitor center is gentler. Yield to hikers and horses, and check the park’s trail status before you go.

Is there singletrack or just fire road?

Both. Mission Trails mixes wide service roads with narrower singletrack, and the climbs over North and South Fortuna are the local test piece. Black Mountain and Sycamore Canyon add more rolling dirt. For loose, chunky terrain, most riders head inland to the Cleveland National Forest east of the city, outside the area this page searches.

How do clubs end up on this page?

A club shows up here when it has posted a mountain bike ride on RiderFinder or Strava recently, or has one coming up. We never add a club because of its name or description, so the list reflects rides clubs actually post.
