Where to mountain bike near Long Beach

In town, you’ve got pavement. The San Gabriel River Trail and the Los Angeles River Trail both run down to Long Beach, and the beach path follows the shoreline. That’s flat, car-free mileage for building fitness or commuting, and it links neighborhoods without fighting traffic. It isn’t dirt, but it keeps your legs turning between trips to the hills.

For trail, you drive. The closest is the Palos Verdes Peninsula preserve to the west, where multi-use trails open to bikes wrap the coastal slopes above Portuguese Bend. It’s a scenic loop more than a technical one, and landslides and wet weather close parts of it, so check its status first. For climbing and singletrack, go north to the fire roads and bike-legal stretches of the Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains, or into the San Gabriel foothills. All of it sits outside the radius this page searches.

So the Long Beach plan has two parts: spin the river and beach paths during the week, and carpool out to Palos Verdes or the mountains when you want dirt. That second part is where a club earns its keep, since sharing the drive to the trailhead beats sorting out the logistics alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there mountain biking in Long Beach?

Not inside the city. Long Beach is flat and almost entirely paved, with no trail network of its own. The nearest real off-road riding is the Palos Verdes Peninsula preserve to the west and the Santa Monica Mountains to the north, both outside the radius this page covers.

What can I ride locally on a mountain bike?

Mostly paved paths that are good for base miles. The San Gabriel River Trail and the Los Angeles River Trail both reach Long Beach, and the beach bike path runs along the shore. They’re flat and car-free, handy for fitness and commuting, but none of it is dirt or technical. For climbing and trail, you’ll be driving.

Where do Long Beach riders go for real trail?

West to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, where the nature preserve has multi-use trails open to bikes, or north to the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Gabriel foothills for fire roads and the bike-legal Backbone Trail. Both are a drive, and a club is the easiest way to carpool.

How do clubs end up on this page?

A club shows up here when it has posted a mountain bike ride on RiderFinder or Strava recently, or has one coming up. We never add a club because of its name or description, so the list reflects rides clubs actually post.
