Which club is near you?
LA is too spread out to ride across town to a 7:30 am start, so most riders pick a club by where it rolls out.
- Westside and Malibu: the Santa Monica Mountains for canyon climbs like Latigo Canyon and Piuma Road, or Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).
- South Bay: the beach path and the climbs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
- Pasadena: the Rose Bowl Loop and quick access to the San Gabriel Mountains.
- San Fernando Valley: the Sepulveda Basin, the Encino Velodrome and Big Tujunga Canyon.
- Eastside: Griffith Park, Elysian Park and the LA River Bike Path, close to home.
The big climbs
Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) from La Cañada Flintridge to Mt. Wilson is the benchmark: about 18.5 miles and 4,600 feet, turning onto Mt. Wilson Red Box Road at Red Box for the last stretch to roughly 5,700 feet. Farther east, Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) climbs out of Glendora into the same range.
Out west, Mulholland Highway rolls through the Santa Monica Mountains past the Rock Store in Cornell, a roadside landmark since 1961. Don’t mix it up with Mulholland Drive, the ridge road above Hollywood and the Valley.
Car-free miles
The Marvin Braude Bike Trail (the beach path) runs about 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance County Beach; the Hermosa Beach section is the Strand. In Griffith Park, Griffith Park Drive between Travel Town and Mt. Hollywood Drive has been closed to cars since 2022.
Rides with history
The Rose Bowl ride has lapped the Rose Bowl Loop, about 3.1 to 3.3 miles around the stadium, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for more than 40 years. Fargo Street in Echo Park, a single block at 32%, hosted the Fargo Street hill climb from the 1970s until 2019. CicLAvia has closed city streets to cars for open-streets days since October 2010.
Next up is LA28. The Olympic road races start at the Venice Beach Boardwalk on July 22–23, 2028 and finish uphill at Griffith Observatory, and track cycling goes to the velodrome in Carson.
Frequently asked questions
What cycling clubs are there in Los Angeles?
The list above shows the LA clubs that post their group rides, each with its next ride, start time and distance, so it changes as clubs add rides. Read a club’s profile to see what kind of riding it does before you join.
How do I choose a cycling club in Los Angeles?
Start with where it rolls out, because LA traffic makes a long drive to a weekend ride hard to keep up. Then check the distance of the club’s next ride and read how it describes its riding. There are separate LA pages for gravel rides, mountain biking and women’s cycling, and you can message a club’s organizers in the app before your first ride.
Which part of Los Angeles is best for road cycling?
It depends what you’re after. The Westside and Malibu lead into Santa Monica Mountains climbs like Latigo Canyon and Piuma Road. The South Bay has the beach path and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Pasadena has the Rose Bowl Loop and Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). The Valley has the Sepulveda Basin and Big Tujunga Canyon, and the Eastside has Griffith Park and the LA River Bike Path.
What are the main road climbs near Los Angeles?
The benchmark is Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) from La Cañada Flintridge to Mt. Wilson: about 18.5 miles and 4,600 feet of climbing. Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) climbs the same San Gabriel Mountains from Glendora, and Latigo Canyon and Piuma Road climb the Santa Monica Mountains from the Malibu side. In town, the roads up to Griffith Observatory climb to the LA28 road race finish.
What is the Rose Bowl ride in Pasadena?
It’s a Pasadena group ride that has lapped the Rose Bowl Loop (about 3.1 to 3.3 miles around the stadium and Brookside Golf Course) for more than 40 years. It rolls Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:55 pm from about mid-March until daylight saving time ends (Nov 1, 2026), for about ten laps. Times change outside that season, so check the Rose Bowl Ride Facebook page before you go.
Is Mulholland good for cycling?
Depends which Mulholland. Mulholland Highway, the one most road riders mean, heads west from Woodland Hills through the Santa Monica Mountains, past the Rock Store in Cornell, to Pacific Coast Highway at Leo Carrillo State Park. Mulholland Drive, the ridge road above Hollywood and the Valley, carries more traffic. Dirt Mulholland, the unpaved stretch between Encino Hills Drive and Topanga Canyon, is closed to cars and suits a gravel bike.
Is there a bike path along the beach in Los Angeles?
Yes. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail runs about 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades to Torrance County Beach, through Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach (where it’s called the Strand). It’s flat and shared with people walking, so go early on weekends. South of Torrance, the roads climb onto the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
