Olympic road race route: Venice Beach to Griffith Observatory

What’s official: the road races start on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and finish at Griffith Observatory, on the south slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, 346 m (1,135 ft) above sea level. The women’s race is 150 km (about 93 miles) on Saturday, July 22, 2028; the men’s is 250 km (about 155 miles) on Sunday, July 23. The finish is uphill.

What isn’t official yet: the roads in between. Venice and the Observatory are only about 13.5 miles apart in a straight line, so most of the 93 or 155 miles happen well away from that direct line. LA28 hasn’t said which roads or hills the route uses.

How to ride it today: the Venice end sits on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (the beach path), about 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance County Beach. It’s shared with people walking and gets busy on weekend mornings. There’s no continuous car-free path from the beach to Griffith Park, so the easiest way to learn the streets in between is with a group that rides them. Rides starting near Venice:

Time trial route: LA Zoo to Griffith Observatory

What’s official: the time trials start at the LA Zoo, in the northeast corner of Griffith Park, on Wednesday, July 19, 2028. They finish at Griffith Observatory, about 4 km (2.5 miles) southwest of the zoo as the crow flies and uphill from it. LA28 lists the course at 35 km (about 22 miles). The route between the two hasn’t been published.

How to ride it today: Griffith Park’s paved roads link the zoo to the Observatory climb.

  • The flat part: Zoo Drive and Crystal Springs Drive follow the flat east side of Griffith Park. Next to them, the LA River Path covers about 3.6 miles between Riverside Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard, bikes and pedestrians only.
  • The car-free climb: Griffith Park Drive between Travel Town and Mt. Hollywood Drive has been closed to cars since June 2022, and Mount Hollywood Drive is closed to traffic except park vehicles. Together they make a quiet climb into the middle of the park.
  • The finish: climb West Observatory Road. The Observatory says East Observatory Road is one-way downhill and you can no longer bike up it. From Los Feliz Boulevard, Fern Dell Drive becomes Western Canyon Road and climbs to West Observatory Road.
  • Park rules: bikes stay on paved park roads (no trails or fire roads), Griffith Park’s inbound gates close at 10 pm, and the Observatory is closed Mondays. The Observatory roads get congested and can be closed to cars at busy times.

Paralympic road events at the LA Zoo

What’s official: the Para cycling road race, time trial and mixed team relay all start and finish at the LA Zoo in Griffith Park, between August 22 and 26, 2028.

What isn’t official yet: the routes. LA28 lists road races of 26–125 km (about 16–78 miles) and time trials of 10–40 km (about 6–25 miles), depending on athlete classification, plus a mixed team relay in which each handcyclist rides three laps of a circuit. It says the routes will be unveiled before the end of 2026. Zoo Drive and Crystal Springs Drive, described above, are the roads around the start.

Track cycling: the Carson velodrome (VELO Sports Center)

What’s official: Olympic track racing (July 25–30, 2028) and Para track (four competition days from August 16) will be at the Carson Velodrome, the VELO Sports Center at 18400 Avalon Blvd in Carson. It’s a 250-meter indoor wooden track that opened in 2004 and is the home track of USA Cycling’s national track program.

How to ride it today: unlike most 2028 venues, this one’s open to you now.

  • Age and certification: the velodrome is open to riders 16 and older. Everyone takes a certification class first (an introductory series, or an accelerated class for experienced riders) before joining sessions.
  • No track bike needed: rental track bikes are available.
  • Sessions once you’re certified: open training, racer sessions and the Tuesday and Thursday evening “Jam Session”.
  • Prices and times change, so check the VELO Sports Center “Getting Started” page before you go.

Where is Olympic BMX in 2028? The Sepulveda Basin

What’s official: both 2028 Olympic BMX events are in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in the San Fernando Valley, along the LA River: BMX racing at Valley Complex 4 (July 15–16) and BMX freestyle park at Valley Complex 1 (July 28–29). LA28 describes Valley Complex 1 as a temporary open-air venue, so there’s no Games BMX course to ride yet.

How to ride it today: the Sepulveda Basin bike path makes a flat loop of about 9 miles around the recreation area, past Lake Balboa, bounded by Victory Boulevard, White Oak Avenue, Burbank Boulevard and Woodley Avenue. It’s shared with skaters and walkers, and surface condition varies by section.

Mountain bike: Industry Hills, City of Industry

What’s official: cross-country racing on July 17–18, 2028 will be on the Industry Hills MTB Course in the City of Industry, in the San Gabriel Valley next to the Pacific Palms resort. LA28 says the races use laps of 3.5–6 km (about 2.2–3.7 miles), with climbs, descents and rocky terrain. The UCI says the course will stay as a legacy of the Games.

How to ride it today: you can’t yet. In spring 2026 the City of Industry filed a notice to build a 3.8 km (2.4-mile) mountain bike trail on the hillside of the Industry Hills golf course. This page will be updated if public riding opens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LA28 Olympic road race route?

It starts on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and finishes uphill at Griffith Observatory. The women race 150 km (93 miles) on July 22 and the men 250 km (155 miles) on July 23. As of October 3, 2026, that’s all LA28 has published: it says the full route will be unveiled before the end of 2026, and until then any detailed route map is unofficial.

When are the cycling events at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles?

BMX racing is July 15–16, 2028; mountain bike July 17–18; individual time trials July 19; the women’s road race July 22; the men’s road race July 23; track July 25–30; BMX freestyle July 28–29; Para track four days from August 16 at the Carson velodrome; and Para road events August 22–26 at the LA Zoo. These dates follow LA28’s published schedule and can still change.

Can you bike up to Griffith Observatory?

Yes, on West Observatory Road. East Observatory Road is one-way downhill, and the Observatory says you can no longer bike up it. From Los Feliz Boulevard, Fern Dell Drive becomes Western Canyon Road and climbs to West Observatory Road. Bikes must stay on paved roads in Griffith Park, inbound park gates close at 10 pm, and the Observatory has bike racks.

Is Griffith Park Drive still closed to cars?

Yes. Griffith Park Drive between Travel Town and Mt. Hollywood Drive has been closed to cars since June 2022, after a cyclist was killed on a nearby park road, and the Recreation and Parks board extended the closure indefinitely that August. Mount Hollywood Drive is also closed to traffic except park vehicles, so both make quiet climbs.

Can I ride the Carson velodrome where the 2028 Olympic track events will be held?

Yes. The VELO Sports Center in Carson, a 250-meter indoor wooden track at 18400 Avalon Blvd, is open to riders 16 and older. Riders take a certification class first, rental track bikes are available, and certified riders can join open training, racer sessions and the Tuesday and Thursday evening Jam Session. Check the VELO Sports Center website for current class dates and prices.

Where is Olympic BMX in 2028?

In the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, in LA’s San Fernando Valley. BMX racing is at Valley Complex 4 on July 15–16, and BMX freestyle park is at Valley Complex 1 on July 28–29. LA28 describes the freestyle venue as temporary, so there’s nothing to ride there yet, but the basin’s flat 9-mile bike path loop around Lake Balboa is open.

Can I ride the 2028 Olympic mountain bike course at Industry Hills?

Not yet. The Industry Hills MTB Course in the City of Industry, next to the Pacific Palms resort, is still being built, and in spring 2026 the city filed a notice for a 3.8 km trail on the golf-course hillside. The UCI says the course will stay after the 2028 Games, but no public riding has been announced.
